Dog Grooming Careers & Training

What qualifications do I need to become a dog groomer?

Confused by dog grooming qualifications? Learn what to ask a training provider and why practical ability matters alongside the qualification itself.

Qualifications are one of the first things prospective students ask about, and rightly so. If you are investing in professional education, you should understand exactly what qualification you are working towards and what the course requires from you.

The difficulty is that course names and training routes can become confusing when you are new to the industry.

My advice is to ask the provider to explain the qualification in plain English. What is the exact qualification? Who is it awarded through? How are you assessed? What practical skills will you need to demonstrate and what does successful completion actually show?

Then ask about the training around the qualification.

A certificate and professional competence are connected, but they are not identical. When an owner hands you their dog, they will need you to have practical ability and judgement as well as evidence that you completed training.

That is why I believe the qualification should sit inside a wider professional learning experience rather than becoming the sole objective.

The Pet Studio Academy will clearly show the confirmed qualification attached to each current course so prospective students can understand exactly what they are choosing before enrolling.
