Dog Grooming Careers & Training

College or private dog grooming training: which is right for me?

Comparing college and private dog grooming courses? Learn what to consider including practical experience, teaching, environment and your career goals.

There is no single training route that is automatically right for every future groomer. College courses and private training can both have a place, and the best choice depends on what you need from the learning experience.

Rather than starting with the label on the provider, compare the actual training.

Who will teach you? What professional grooming experience do they have? How much practical work is included? What kinds of dogs will you encounter? What qualification will you work towards? How much direct feedback will you receive and what does the training environment feel like?

Also think about how you learn best. Some people thrive in a larger educational environment. Others prefer learning within a working salon where they can see the profession operating around them.

At The Pet Studio Academy, students learn within an established grooming business. For us, that connection with the real profession is important. Grooming is not performed on perfect demonstration dogs in a perfect order. Real dogs move, coats arrive in different conditions and professional judgement matters.

Do not choose private training simply because it is private, and do not choose college simply because it is familiar. Visit your options where possible and ask enough questions to understand what your day to day learning will actually involve.

The right training provider should be comfortable helping you make an informed decision.
